Smoking Cessation-a magic bullet for chronic disea
Overview : |
Smoking and tobacco use have become the major neglected public health problem in both developed and developing countries. Studies have shown the health consequences of tobacco use, ranging from malignancy, cardiovascular disease, chronic pulmonary diseases, to diabetes and tuberculosis. It is even stressed that smoking cause diseases to all body organs. As one of the preventable risk factors for chronic disease, tobacco use has significantly increased the morbidity and mortality of chronic disease. Despite the effectiveness of smoking prevention program shown in several studies, smoking prevention alone will not be sufficient to reduce the morbidity and mortality burden of tobacco-related disease in near future. As a complement, smoking cessation should be encouraged to smoker, particularly by health professional.
This module is being offered to respond to lack of integrated smoking cessation curriculum in the medical school. In this module, students will be introduced to the importance of advocating smoking cessation in the clinical setting. With its wide range perspective and its multidisciplinary team, this module intends to stimulate students as the future health professionals to engage to smoking cessation activities by providing students with evidences from different perspectives.
